Laser Hair Removal

In recent years laser hair removal has quickly become one of the most popular aesthetic treatments in the World. With Laser hair removal, you can say goodbye to unwanted hair that leaves you with bumps, nicks, or burns, and say hello to skin that is smooth without the need to remove hair every day.

Laser hair removal is a medical procedure that utilizes a laser to remove unwanted hair. During your treatment, a laser beam will pass harmlessly through the skin until it meets an individual hair follicle. The energy of the laser beam is absorbed by the melanin in the hair bulb and the hemoglobin in the tiny vessels around the bulb, which eliminates future hair growth. This process is called selective photothermolysis.

With Laser Hair Removal you can eliminate unwanted hair in nearly any area. Common treatment locations include legs, armpits, upper lip, chin and the bikini line. Some people choose to treat the sides of their face, the nape of the neck, the hairline of the forehead, the chin or neck, or the arms. Some of the benefits of laser hair removal at D’illumina Skin Clinique include:

Precision – Fine and dark, coarse hairs can be selectively targeted even in dark skin types without damaging surrounding skin.
Painlessness -- We make the procedure painless in most indivduals, without the need for topical anesthesia.
Speed – Each pulse of the laser takes only a fraction of a second and can treat multiple hairs at the same time. We can treat a full back in minutes.
Predictability – After an average of three to five sessions, more than 95% of patients will experience permanent hair loss.

On average, 4-8 Laser Hair Removal treatments are needed for maximum results, and are also performed once every 3-8 weeks depending on the area of the body being treated.

Q. Why should I have laser hair removal with Dr. Shankey:

A. We will not waste your time or money.
B. We will investigate whether you have a medical reason to have excess hair.
Some of our patients have excess hair because of medical issues such as polycystic ovarian disease, Cushing's syndrome, or congenital adrenal hyperplasia. You will be screened for hormonal issues as part of your treatment. Laser hair removal can still be performed effectively, but adjunctive therapies may be appropriate. We care aout the total health and well-being of our patients.

Q. Is it painful?

A. We will not hurt you.

Q. What areas can I treat?

A. ANY area that has hair can be treated.
We treat upper lip, sideburns, chin, neck, sides of face, hairline, forehead, nape of neck, chests, shoulders, arms, legs, nipples, abdomens, backs, nose hairs, ear hairs, bikini, gluteal, gluteal crease, unibrow, fingers and toes. We avoid the eyebrows because of concern about scattering of the laser to the iris of the eye.
Men are seeking this treatment in large numbers now, especially for the chest, back, fingers and toes, ears, and nose.
The treatment is also extremely effective for Ingrown hairs of the face or neck in men, and the bikini area in women.

Q. What should I do to prepare for treatment?

A. There is not much for you to do!
You should shave or clip the hairs one or two days before treatment. If you like to wax or pluck the hairs, it should be done 3 to 4 weeks before the treatment. This actually forces the hairs to shift into the early growing phase, when there is more melanin in the bulb of the hair, making the treatment more effective. If you are having a bikini treatment, it helps to shave in the pattern you would like us to follow.

You should not have a treatment if you are tanned or plan to be in intense sunlight in the treated areas for two weeks after or six weeks before treatment, and you should inform us if you have had cold sores in the areas to be treated so that a prophylactic can be provided. So that each treatment can be maximally effective, you should come back at the recommended intervals.

If you have had tattooing of the areas to be treated, such as lip liner, or you want to preserve tattoos in areas where you want to remove hairs, you must consult us before proceeding! White tattoo ink can turn dark, and the laser can eliminate green, blue or black inks.

Q. Is it expensive?

A. Not at all.
Our fees depend upon the areas you want to treat and are very reasonable and affordable. We offer 15% discounts for packages of three or more treatments. Any portion of this that is unused, for any reason, is returned to you without question. When you consider the time and money you are going to save when you no longer need to shave, pluck, or wax, you will feel the treatment is more than affordable: you will wonder why you waited this long to have smooth, unblemished skin!

Facial Or Microdermabrasion

What is microdermabrasion?

Microdermabrasion is a procedure that uses tiny crystals to remove the upper layers of dead skin, revealing fresher, younger-looking skin and evening out minor issues with texture and tone. Microdermabrasion also helps stimulate the production of collagen, so skin looks firmer and smoother over time, and because it removes the upper layers of dead, coarse cells, it allows your skin care products to be better absorbed so they work more effectively. Plus, it can be used on all skin types and tones without risk of scarring or discoloration issues.

What kinds of problems can microdermabrasion treat?

Microdermabrasion can help skin look refreshed and brighter, and it can also help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, mild acne scarring, age spots and brown spots. Many women and men turn to microdermabrasion to help skin achieve a healthy-looking glow and end dullness that can buildup as a result of environmental exposures, age and even stress.

What is the microdermabrasion procedure like?

Microdermabrasion is a gentle procedure that uses a handheld device to spray crystals across the skin's surface, scouring away dead, dry skin one small area at a time. At the same time, a vacuum removes the crystals as well as debris to leave skin looking and feeling deeply cleansed and refreshed. The entire procedure takes less than a half hour to perform for the entire face, and unlike deeper dermabrasion treatments, there's no downtime. The only potential aftereffect is slight redness and mild tightness that dissipates within a day. Using moisturizer will help. You may also need to avoid applying makeup for a day.

Does microdermabrasion hurt?

Microdermabrasion is not as aggressive as dermabrasion procedures, so your skin will not need to be numbed. All most patients notice is a tingling sensation as the crystals whisk away dead skin.

Chemical Peels

Mild peels

A series of mild chemical peels—on the face, neck, and/or chest—every few weeks works well for busy people because they get significant results with minimal downtime.
The weaker peels are the AHA peels or fruit acid peels, most commonly glycolic acid, citric acid, and lactic acid, and can help improve acne scars, skin tone, and texture, diminish fine lines and wrinkles, and reduce the effects of sun damage.
“The No Peel Peel’’ is ideal for anyone looking to boost skin’s appearance or jumpstart a new skincare routine. Our exclusive formula uses a 70 percent glycolic acid peel to remove dead cells and debris to regenerate skin cells without the traditional flaking and redness or discomfort associated with more intense formulas, so you get results similar to an intense peel but without the downtime or side effects.”
Here’s what you can expect from this and other mild peels: After a thorough cleansing of the face, the peel is applied with a brush, pad, or cotton swab. “You may feel a slight tingling that lasts for the duration of the peel. With the weaker AHA peels, there is a very short-term pinkish or ruddy glow to the skin.
The before-and-after difference is pronounced. “You will look brighter right away with gradual improvement in fine lines, texture, and pigmentation.” A series of mild or superficial peels is often needed for optimal results. Aftercare matters too. Apply lotion or cream until the skin heals, and use sunscreen daily. It’s OK to wear makeup immediately.

Medium-strength peels

What makes peels a medium strength is the percentage of active ingredients. Medium-strength peels use some of the same acids in mild peels, just at a much higher level.
For example, trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels when used at more than 25 percent are medium strength, but anything lower would be considered superficial or mild.
Here’s what you can expect: Since these peels are deeper, your skin will be red and swollen after application, and blisters may form and break open. Your skin crusts and peels off in one to two weeks.
Other aftercare instructions include applying a lotion or cream to the treated area and avoiding the sun until healing is complete. Makeup is OK after about one week. “It is usually one and done for a while because there is downtime with these medium-strength peels.
Look to medium-depth peels—such as the 35 percent TCA and Jessner solution—to remedy hyperpigmentation and moderate wrinkles. You may also be a candidate if you have heavy sun damage, leathery skin, and coarse wrinkles that are visible even at rest.
Medium-strength chemical peels may also help correct acne scars. Don’t miss

Derma Fillers

Dermal fillers, also known as injectable implants, soft tissue fillers, or wrinkle fillers are medical device implants approved by the FDA for use in helping to create a smoother and/or fuller appearance in the face, including nasolabial folds (the lines extending from the sides of the nose to the edges of the mouth), cheeks, chin, lips, and back of the hands.

Since some dermal fillers are naturally absorbed over time, patients may need to repeat the procedure after some time to maintain the desired effect. Successful results will depend on the underlying tissue structure and the volume and type of filler used. The time that the effect lasts depends on the filler material and the area where it is injected.

Anti Aging Treatments

The most common procedures

The following are several often-used techniques to remove fine wrinkles, scars, uneven pigmentation, and other imperfections.

Botox. Injections of botulinum toxin—a category that includes Botox, Dysport, and Xeomin—are relatively affordable, have very few risks, and require no recovery time. And they're quite effective at temporarily smoothing a wrinkled face, brow, or neck.

Soft tissue fillers. Injections of soft-tissue fillers under the skin can add height to cheekbones, improve the jaw line, diminish acne or surgical scars, restore fullness to hollow cheeks and eyes, fill fine vertical lines, resculpt lips, and fill in nasolabial folds (the deep lines that run from the outside of the nostrils to the corners of the mouth). Some fillers, such as hyaluronic acid and poly-L-lactic acid, are eventually absorbed by the body. Others contain tiny beads of solid materials suspended in gel. The gel is absorbed over time, and the beads form a scaffold for collagen growth.

Chemical peels. Peels are used to treat wrinkles, age spots, discoloration, precancerous skin growths, and superficial scarring. An acid solution—usually glycolic, salicylic, or trichloroacetic acid—is applied to the skin, dissolving skin cells and removing the top layers of the epidermis. The effects vary based on how deeply the peel penetrates, which is determined by the type and strength of the solution used.

Microdermabrasion. In this procedure, the doctor or aesthetician sands an area with tiny aluminum hydroxide crystals to create smoother-looking skin. It's relatively inexpensive, and no recovery time is needed.

Microneedling. This technique—in which a doctor repeatedly applies an electric or battery-operated instrument containing multiple small, thin, sharp needles to the skin—isn't as painful as it sounds. The needles cause tiny injuries that stimulate the production of collagen and elastin. Therapeutic substances, such as hyaluronic acid or ascorbic acid, can be applied before or after needling so the substance penetrates deeply. This procedure is relatively risk-free and inexpensive.

Laser therapy. Lasers can remove moderate to deep lines and wrinkles and significantly improve skin tone, texture, and tightness. Lasers' ability to target specific types of cells in distinct skin layers enables them to treat conditions such as port-wine stains, pigmented birthmarks, and spider veins. They can also erase acne pits and many other scars. We

can help you determine which type of laser therapy is best for you.

Face Acne Treatments

What is acne?

Acne is an extremely common inflammatory skin condition that causes pimples, blackheads, whiteheads, and deeper cysts. It typically erupts on the face, chest, neck, back, and shoulders. Acne, which most often starts in puberty, affects about 85% of individuals between the ages of 12 and 24, although adults in their 30s and 40s often suffer from acne as well. Untreated, acne can result in permanent scarring.

What causes acne?

Acne is caused by a variety of factors, most notably: hormones, heredity, and stress. It occurs when overactive oil glands produce an excess of oil that combines with skin cells to plug pores. Plugged pores, in turn, cause bacteria to multiply, leading to skin breakouts. Sun exposure can exacerbate the condition. It dries the skin, which may initially clear up acne, but also stimulates the sebaceous glands to produce more oil. This causes acne to reoccur, and more severely than before.

What acne treatments does we offer?

We offer the full gamut of acne remedies. Our physicians customize plans to each patient. Approaches used include:

Topicals. These are typically the first-line treatment and include antibiotics, retinoids, or salicylic acid.
Oral antibiotics. Oral antibiotics are frequently used to manage moderate to severe acne, acne that is resistant to topical treatments or covers a large surface area. Common oral antibiotics include tetracycline, doxycycline, minocycline, erythromycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, trimethoprim, and azithromycin.
Combination therapies. Oral antibiotics and topical retinoids together effectively eradicate acne for many patients.
Isotretinoin : This is another oral medication and is the only treatment approved severe cystic acne. Isotretinoin has been used for over 25 years and improves acne for about 85% of patients, after a four to six-month treatment course. Isotretinion can’t be prescribed to pregnant patients, and women who can become pregnant must follow strict birth control rules. The risk of a baby developing severe birth defects is high in patients taking this medication.
Microdermabrasion. This procedure deep cleans pores, can fade acne scars and promotes healthy-looking and feeling skin.
Laser treatments. Laser treatments can refine skin texture and reduce the appearance of acne scars.

Facial Rejuvenation Or Vampire Facial

What is platelet-rich plasma therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma, or PRP, is a processed substance made from your own blood which can stimulate collagen growth and facial rejuvenation. It’s a minimally invasive in-office procedure that involves extracting a small amount of your blood which is then processed in a centrifuge, a machine that spins it at a very high speed. The machine turns your extracted blood into a healing substance rich with growth proteins and platelets. and you are injected with the PRP.

Mesotherapy: The Benefits

The best thing about mesotherapy is the wide array of benefits; from the skin to the scalp…

How mesotherapy can help the skin: Mesotherapy can help target a range of skincare issues from sagging skin and acne scars to melasma, sunspots, and dark circles. Most commonly, a mixture of growth factors and peptides will be inserted to help stimulate skin cell production and increase the production of collagen, aka what keeps our skin plump, tight, and supple. Alternatively, you can insert vitamins and nutrients to reduce unwanted pigmentation by manipulating pigment production. If you have indented acne scars, mesotherapy could also be a great treatment method; with the insertion of hyaluronic acid, it’ll volumize the skin, while other amino acids can promote skin regrowth and healing.

How mesotherapy can help the scalp: Mesotherapy can also be used to address hair loss, whereby a microneedle injects nutrients into the scalp to stimulate activity in the hair follicle. This will help increase blood flow, encouraging the follicle to produce thicker, stronger hair. While this sounds incredible, be prepared as it’ll take multiple treatments over the course of months before you’ll be able to see a change in hair regrowth.

IV Drip Glutathione

What is Glutathione?

Glutathione is a peptide that is naturally produced and found in every cell of the human body, including immune cells. Made up of three essential amino acids (cysteine, glutamate, and glycine), it is often referred to as the master detoxifier for its incredible ability to promote skin health, body function, overall mood and well-being. While it is found naturally within the body, we offer IV infusion therapies to increase glutathione levels and promote our patients’ overall health.

What it Glutathione used for?

Glutathione is an extremely powerful antioxidant that is key to almost all body functions, including:

Improving immune function and helping to fight disease
Lightening and brightening skin by erasing hyper-pigmentation and inhibiting melanin production in cells
Reducing inflammation
Helping your body break down and purge fat
Keeping your body from becoming resistant to drugs
Promoting high energy and mental clarity
Providing anti-aging properties
Improving quality of sleep and combating stress from sleep apnea
Detoxifying and fighting oxidative stress

What are the symptoms of Glutathione deficiency?

Patients with low glutathione levels may experience:
Chronic fatigue
Weakness
Headaches
Dizziness
Problems sleeping
Frequent illnesses
Dermatitis
Difficulty concentrating
Painful joints
Mood instability or depression
There are also many chronic health conditions which are associated with low glutathione levels. Autoimmune disorders, fibromyalgia, heart disease, skin disorders, and many other conditions are associated with low levels of glutathione, and many prescription medications to treat these conditions can further deplete these levels.

Are there ways to boost my Glutathione levels?

There are supplements known to boost your body’s own production of glutathione, including:
Vitamin C (taking Vitamin C with Glutathione can increase absorption)
Vitamin E
Selenium
Curcumin
Silymarin
N-acetylcysteine
An organic diet with an abundance of fresh produce can help your body boost the production of glutathione, but because it is not easily absorbed from food sources an IV glutathione infusion is the most effective way to ensure you are maximizing your levels of the antioxidant.

Is Glutathione IV infusion therapy better than oral supplements?

An IV infusion of glutathione delivers the powerful antioxidant directly into your bloodstream, bypassing the digestive tract where adequate absorption is not a guarantee. Each patient has unique body chemistry, age, and health which will affect the rate at which nutrients are absorbed into their system. Once in the bloodstream, glutathione is carried throughout the entire body, including the brain, heart, lungs, and muscle tissue, so your cells can benefit from glutathione’s detoxifying and protective properties.

Are there any side effects of Glutathione treatment?

Several studies have linked long-term use of glutathione supplements to low zinc levels, and patients consuming the nutrient orally have reported digestive distress including abdominal cramps and bloating. Intravenous (IV) glutathione infusion bypasses the digestive tract altogether, delivering the master antioxidant directly to your cells. The vast majority of patients receiving IV glutathione treatment have no side effects at all. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, it is best to check with your doctor.

Permanent Makeup

Permanent makeup, or cosmetic tattooing, applies permanent color to your skin. An artistic process, it involves strokes of organic pigment beneath the skin to create a natural appearance that lasts a lifetime. Our highly skilled and well known micropigmentation specialists often apply permanent makeup to:
Eyebrows
Eyes such as eyeliner or lash enhancement
Lips
This can save you time on a daily basis or eliminate makeup allergies.

How permanent makeup works
Our permanent makeup specialists are more than skin care experts. They’re artists, who work by hand or with machine assistance, depending on your unique cosmetic needs. You’ll feel virtually no pain, as the makeup area is numbed prior to the procedure.
Over the following week, the new pigment may fade by about 50 percent. Two weeks later, you’ll schedule a re-application, which will reach your desired pigment. Please keep in mind that because the pigment lives so close to the top of the skin, many patients require a touch up about once a year.

Permanent makeup costs

Permanent makeup costs vary based on your specific treatment goals and other services you may also undergo. Your surgeon will discuss the cost of permanent makeup with you during your consultation, and our team is always available to help establish a permanent makeup payment plan that works for you.

Permanent makeup risks

Certain products—such as those containing aloe vera, Retin A or glycolic acid—may cause permanent makeup to fade more quickly. If you have fair skin, the tattooed skin also may fade more rapidly.
Risks include infection, allergic reactions, granulomas, and keloid formations. Your specialist will discuss any concerns prior to your procedure.

Scar Removal

Scars, keloids, and lesions can occur as a result of any number of issues. Whether it be a wound, sore, or a result of a surgical procedure. Acne scars are even a fairly common form of scarring that affects many regardless of age, race, or gender.
Scar removal is highly dependent upon where along the body your scarring is located as well as the level of correction needed. The number of treatments as well as the type of treatments may differ as a result of these factors.
Scar Removal Treatment Options
If you’re in need of scar removal it is highly dependent upon where your scarring, the type of scarring as well as the level of correction needed. Generally, We prefers the use of laser scar removal. As laser treatments offer our patients the ability to remove their scarring with non-invasive means, leaving them side effect and downtime free!

During your consult we will determine the level of correction needed.

Common Treatment Options Typically Include:
Skin Removal Surgery or Skin Grafting: These procedures are only necessary in extreme cases. If patients require a far more invasive level of correction. Surgery often involves the removal of scar tissue, allowing it to heal and regenerate on its own. While skin grafting or punch grafting involved removing the skin from one area and moving it to another.
Chemical Peels or Solutions: The use of chemical solutions being spread acris the skin and face. The outer layers of skin will be burned away, allowing for newer layers of skin to grow in its place.
Microdermabrasion: Using micro-crystals, we exfoliate the skin. Duffing away superficial surface scarring, and allowing new, fresh skin cells to grow in its place.
Dermal Fillers: For facial scarring injectable solutions can fill lost facial volume and when injected into a scar site they tend to help reduce their appearance. Again, this works best for minor facial scarring.
Laser Skin Resurfacing: The most method of scar removal at our practice. Works the best on the most vast number of facial and body scars, often regardless of size. In most cases depending on how “bad” the scar may be a number of treatments may be required.
For more information on scar removal or to schedule a consultation, be sure to contact D’illumina Skin today.
